I am thinking of moving to Mexico and am wondering how your move is going? Are you having an exciting adventure??

Les writes:

It has been an exciting adventure from the “get go”. From the decision making process…should we go?….can we do it?….good grief, you’ve got to be kidding me….all this needs to be done before hand!! And, now, here we are a week away from making the actual move. Exciting yes. Thought provoking, yes. A learning experience, yes. Fun, yes. And there is more to come. Take a look at our past blogs and you will get a feel for the process! Thanks for your comment!!

Couldn’t help but notice how your stories mirrored our own experience when we made the move from Chicago to Ajijic 5 years ago … we are happy to tell you that it will all be worth the efforts … it seems that every day here in Paradise is better than the day before. Bienvenidos! Please feel free to contact us … we have the answers to all those questions you’ll have once you’re here. Debra & Tom

we have been living in Leon,GTO for about a year. We are interested in information about recieving prescription medications from the US. Many of my meds I can buy here but some are not carried in Mexico.

David writes:

Hi Peter–

I wish I could help you there. Most of the meds Les and I take are available here in Mexico, although the generics are sometimes hard to find. From people I’ve spoken with, if you try to import your meds, say via mail boxes etc., they’ll just be confiscated at customs.

Two alternatives come to mind. The first is to go to the border and bring them across yourself. you shouldn’t have any trouble doing that. In some towns, there are bulletin boards listing people who are going back to the states. they can pick up your meds for you and bring them back in when they return.

Alternatively, I’ve known people who took the route of just going to a competent Mexican doctor, explaining what meds they took in the states, and asking them to prescribe something that they can buy in Mexico.

good luck,

–david

Hi,
I just found your wonderful site about moving to Mexico. How is the receiving your social security checks working out? I use BofA in the USA..will I have to open an account at a Mexican Bank? Do strictly use your ATM card to access your money? Are you hit with fees doing this? Any info sure would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael

This is a most enchanting site. I came across you blog on Wednesday and have spent a number of hours since then reading each one, including the comments.
I have been having conversations in my head in response to your stories.

I have a friend in Ajijic who uses Skype on the computer to keep in touch with her family, and sometimes me. There is a free download on their website and there is a video function. By the way, I am going to suggest she (Joelle) visit your blog.

I have only a little idea of the laws around employment in Mexico, mostly what I learned from you. I woke up about 2:30 this morning wondering if you are planning on offering these beautiful photographs for sale on your web site. Why couldn’t David take pictures for the real estate offices, with permission of course, and post them to a “members only” section of the web site, where they could be purchased. I think that you would not need permits for sales on the web, but I have not checked that out.

I found out about Ajijic in June 2008, and knew through a series of serendipitous events that I want to retire there. Since then I have spent many hours exploring information on Ajijic, and retirement in Mexico. I currently live in Salem, Oregon but have lived in a variety of places, including Alaska, Canada, India, Nepal, Thailand. I was born and raised in Chicago, and have seen the beautiful sunrises over Lake Michigan.

I have been informally studying Spanish, and plan to take some classes before I arrive. Below is my favorite Spanish quote, and after reading your entire blog think it is relevant to you both.

Extiende las alas,
volar, volar,
que es bello de ver.

We are starting our quest for the perfect retirement spot on the Yucatan in Mexico. We have just begun researching and would appreciate any assistance to overcome some of the hurdles.

My husband and I will be moving to Ajijic the end of May from Vero Beach Florida. We are actually having a house built there. We might be considered crazy for doing that. We’ll find out. We’ll have some questions for you regarding the border crossing.
